How To Optimize Your Car’s Mileage

Optimizing Your Car’s Mileage

With the constant rise in fuel prices, increasing the mileage you get out of your car is the best way to keep costs low. Here are some great tips that will help you spend less on gas by increasing the efficiency of your car.

Turn on the pressure

Making sure your car’s tyre pressure is optimal affects the fuel efficiency of your car to a large extent. If your tyre pressure is low, the contact area between the road and your tyre automatically increases. This leads to a direct rise in the friction between the road and the tyre’s rubber, making your car consume more fuel. Tyre’s that are over-inflated reduce fuel consumption. As long as you ensure the tyres are inflated according to levels recommended by the manufacturer, you will be alright. Remember to regularly check your tyres, at least once a week.

Operating your car

In controlling your car, be as smooth as you possibly can. Be gentle with the brake pedals and accelerator. Being rough and too speedy could be fun but in turn harm the fuel efficiency of your car. Also avoid being too sudden with the brakes.

Plan your trips

Several short trips use up more fuel than one long trip. Staring up your engine consumes extra fuel. Consolidating trips is a great way to increase the number of miles you can travel per gallon. Combining tasks also helps your drive less, leading to lesser usage of gas. While travelling, plan your route sensibly. Take one that has minimal stops, traffic and turns. Highways should be taken whenever possible.

Cut down the load

A light car will consume lesser amounts of fuel. Weight contributes largely to kinetic energy loss in cars that are not hybrid. You can get rid of extra weight by removing car seats that you do not use. In case you store heavy items in your trunk, try getting rid of them. 100 pounds increases your fuel consumption by about 2 percent. Just get rid of the things you do not frequently need in your car.

Drive slow

Driving fast makes your engine work harder against the wind. Speeding is known to lower your fuel efficiency by a maximum of 33 percent. Also try and shift to high gears as cars use more fuel when they are accelerating from lower gears. Cruise control is a great way to remain at a constant speed and reduce fuel consumption.

Avoid breaking randomly

Breaking constantly uses up your cars energy from fuel. Accelerating after you brake consumes even more fuel. So while driving in the city, keep an eye on the road ahead and slow down when you see a red light or jam so that you don’t break suddenly.

Use the air conditioner wisely

Keeping the air conditioner on while you drive in city traffic that is stop and go will force your engine to work harder, consequentially using more fuel. But keeping your windows rolled up with the air conditioner on at high speeds increases fuel efficient because there is lesser resistance from wind entering your car.
