Maintaining an automobile is something that every vehicle owner pays attention to. For some, it is an obsession. Even a small scratch or a minor glitch will infuriate them and they won’t have peace of mind until it is fixed. However, one common trend automobile repair technicians have noticed is the damage caused due to improper maintenance techniques. Here is a note on some of those mistakes and ways to rectify them.
Under-inflated and Overinflated Tires
It is recommended that you check the pressure of your tires regularly. Under-inflated tires will reduce the mileage of your vehicle. Overinflated tires will wear out soon and the grip offered by them is also less. Even though people get their tires checked regularly, they under inflate or over-inflate their tires. Make sure you check the driver’s manual that comes with your vehicle for the optimum pressure and memorize it.
Tune-Ups
Some people who own modern cars take their car to the garage for tune-ups. Tune-up was required for the older valves and injection systems. But in modern day vehicles, the fuel injection is computer controlled and the valves do not require re-adjustment. The carburetor has been replaced by a fuel injection system. Only the spark plug, which needs a replacement every 100,000 miles, is the sole remnant of the older generation engine system.
The bottom line is that your new age cars do not require tune-ups. The technician will just check the brakes and the oil levels in the name of tune-ups. So, don’t waste your hard earned money on these futile visits to the garage.
Oil Change Intervals
Each and every car manufacturer will specify the interval in which you must regularly change the oil. Some manufacturers advise for every 3000 miles, while other might be as long as once every 15,000 miles. Whatever the interval is, you must dutifully follow it and get the oil changed.
The oil is for lubrication of the engine and ignoring it will reduce its efficiency. Not only that, it will also reduce the engine’s lifespan. The oil is responsible to collect all the dirt and any other foreign particles from the engine and keeping the engine clean. All the dirt will get accumulated in the oil over time and hence, it requires periodic replacement.
High Octane Overdose
Some cars specify that they can efficiently run on 87-octane gas. However, there is a misconception that higher the octane rating, higher will be the mileage. This is wrong. Higher octane gas usage will result in improved performance such as pick up and top speed. You don’t need 91-octane gas to move around the city, especially in slow moving traffic. This misconception has resulted only in increased profits for fuel companies.
Wheel Alignment
When you change your tires because of a puncture or some other form of damage, you would have done it by hand. The problem here is that there is every chance of the wheel being misaligned. Wheel alignment is a very delicate process where the exact angles are determined using lasers. Wheel misalignment will lead to unilateral wear and tear of the tires. It is recommended that you get your wheel alignment checked every 5,000 miles.
